The statement
I have set out to record the face of this land as it truly appears, before the westward tide of settlement alters it beyond recognition. The history and customs of a vanishing people, I declared, were a subject worthy of a man's whole life, and the same resolve now extends to the ground they inhabit—these vast prairies and river valleys that give shape to their existence and will survive in memory only if faithfully drawn.
This landscape is rendered as I saw it, on the spot, with no studio embellishment. The broad horizon and open sky dominate the composition, as they do the actual country; earth tones convey the character of the place itself. I wished, as I wrote, "to rescue from oblivion the appearance and dignity" of the Native nations, and that dignity belongs equally to the land that formed them. The viewer should understand that this is an eyewitness record, not an invention—a document of a particular place at a particular moment, set down so that posterity will know what stood here before the advance of civilization swept it away.
