The statement
I have resolved to visit every tribe of Indians on this continent, if my life is spared, and to become their historian—to rescue from oblivion so much of their primitive looks and customs as the acquisitions of my brush and pen can reach. The history and customs of a vanishing people, preserved in pictures, are a subject worthy of a man's whole life. I wish to record their looks, dress, and manners before contact can change them, and to rescue from oblivion the appearance and dignity of the Native nations, whom I believe the advance of civilisation is rapidly destroying, so that a truthful record of them will survive for posterity.
This scene, taken from life on the spot, shows what I alone among white men have been permitted to witness. I have painted exactly what I saw, with no invention or embellishment, because the truth of the thing is what matters. The composition opens the space plainly before the viewer, the earth tones and careful arrangement of figures serving one purpose: an honest record. I insist that my paintings are an exact eyewitness account, faithful to the reality I observed, and I stake my reputation on their accuracy as documentary evidence of a people and a time that will not return.
