Two women have tea, after Mary Cassatt

The statement

I have spent years studying the private lives of women — the quiet rituals that unfold behind closed doors, unwitnessed by the world that demands we perform sentiment or decoration. When I discovered Degas's pastels in a dealer's window, I pressed my face to the glass and returned again and again; they showed me that modern life, even its most fleeting gestures, could be rendered with absolute clarity and unsentimental truth. His invitation to exhibit with the independents freed me from the Salon jury, and I have not looked back.

In this new canvas I observe two women at tea, each absorbed in her own thought yet bound by the shared ritual. I have built the composition from flat planes and strong contour — the lesson of the Japanese prints I urged Berthe Morisot to see, insisting that "anyone who wanted to make color prints could dream of nothing more beautiful." The tilted table, the overlapping cups and saucers, the patterned dress against papered wall — all lock into a single decorative surface, yet the downward gazes and clasped hands anchor the design in something real: the dignity of women's private bond, observed without gloss or idealization.
