Imagined after Mary Cassatt
This seated figure looking out the window
After Mary Cassatt, made 2026-08-19. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have spent my career observing the private moments of women's lives — the absorbed attention of a mother bathing her child, the quiet contemplation of a letter — and granting them the dignity and seriousness that art too often reserves for public, masculine subjects. This new work continues that effort. A woman sits alone at the window, looking out, and I have tried to capture the quality of her attention without sentiment or pretense.
The composition owes much to what I learned from the Japanese prints I saw in 1890, when I wrote to Berthe Morisot urging her to come see them, insisting that "anyone who wanted to make color prints could dream of nothing more beautiful." That exhibition gave me the flat, linear, decorative language I had been seeking. Here, the window frame divides the canvas into bold geometric planes; the figure's silhouette reads cleanly against the light. I want the viewer to feel the authenticity of the moment — not a posed tableau, but a woman granted the space to think, to look, to simply be, observed with the same candor I bring to every interior scene.
