The statement
I have always painted what I observe — the private, everyday world of women and children as it truly is, not as sentiment would have us imagine it. When Degas's pastels first appeared in a dealer's window, I pressed my face to the glass and knew I had found my direction; when the Japanese prints came to Paris in 1890, I wrote to Berthe Morisot insisting she come see them, for "anyone who wanted to make color prints could dream of nothing more beautiful." From both I learned to flatten space, to trust pattern and line, to let strong contour hold a figure against wallpaper or carpet without false modeling.
Here, the child sits absorbed — not in a mother's lap or a bath, but in the glowing screen. The iPad replaces the basin, the Diet Coke the watchful dog. I have kept the high, tilted viewpoint and the overlapping patterns that flatten the room into a single design. The downward gaze, the self-contained stillness — these are the same qualities I have always sought. What has changed is the nature of the intimacy: solitary, virtual, yet no less genuine. I paint what I see, and this too is a child's private world, observed with candor and without judgment.
