The statement

I have painted this mountain prospect with its two living figures and their dog because they stand before me, and a good painter must know how to imitate natural things well. I paint only what I see. The light falls from above and behind the viewer, raking across the shoulders of the man and woman and touching the spotted coat of the animal so that each form emerges from shadow with the same tangible presence I have always demanded. The distant peaks recede into darkness at the edges of the canvas; I hold the eye on these three companions by isolating them in a cone of illumination against the vast indifferent ground.

The composition is simple and pressed close. The couple's quiet regard for the view and for one another, the dog's alert stillness—these are the arrested living instants I have always sought. No ideal types, no ancient draperies. A spotted cattle dog has as much claim to my brush as any saint if it breathes and catches the light. The viewer should feel the weight of actual bodies occupying actual space, the chill mountain air, the momentary harmony of creatures alive together under a single sun.
