Imagined after Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio
A gathering
After Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, made 2026-08-19. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a new work showing a gathering, and I paint it as I paint all subjects — directly from life, because a good painter must know how to imitate natural things well. I said as much under oath in Rome, and I hold to it still.
The composition presses these figures near the picture plane, as in my *Calling of Saint Matthew*, where I showed men at a table summoned by divine light. Here too a single beam rakes across the assembly from darkness, isolating faces and gestures with sculptural force. I use no preparatory drawings; the living model before me tells me where the light must fall and where shadow must hold the canvas. Darkness does not merely frame the scene — it is the ground from which truth emerges.
I want the viewer to feel the physical presence of these bodies, the weight and warmth of cloth and flesh. The light reveals not ideal beauty but the actual form of real people gathered in a moment of consequence. As in my *Supper at Emmaus*, where flung arms drove revelation outward, this gathering catches its instant of charged life — not performed, but truly witnessed and set down.
