The statement
I have spent my life in pursuit of a beauty that transcends the material world, guided by line rather than mass. In this new work, as in all my paintings, I seek to give form to grace itself—that quality which the ancients knew as divine favor and which we might also call the effortless flow of perfect proportion. "Everything is carried by line," as those who study my Birth of Venus observe: the long curves, the streaming drapery, the rhythm that moves across the surface like music made visible.
I work in a shallow space, like a woven tapestry, because depth would anchor the figures too firmly to earth. My patrons among the Medici taught me to see beauty as a ladder toward the eternal, and though I left no written treatise, my paintings speak this conviction. The pale, cool colors and the near-absence of shadow keep my figures weightless, more emblem than body. Even in festive scenes, a wistful sadness—what some call melancholy—touches the beauty, reminding us that all lovely things are transient. My aim is contemplative: to offer the viewer not sensation but reflection, beauty that elevates the spirit through its very refinement.
