A boy,a son and a woman, after Sandro Botticelli

The statement

I have just completed a sacred tondo showing the Madonna with the Child and the young Baptist — a boy, a son, and a woman bound in tender affection. As in my Madonna of the Magnificat, I have let the circular frame guide the composition: the figures curve inward, their heads and halos bending to the arc, drawing the eye spirally toward the Christ Child at the center. Everything is carried by line. The drapery falls in those long, flowing rhythms I have sought all my life, each fold answering the next in a kind of visual music, and I have worked delicate gold hatching into the hair and the edges of the veil to catch the light without weight or shadow.

I wished the viewer to feel grace itself made visible — not the robust flesh of earthly bodies, but something more refined, more nearly emblematic. The color remains pale and cool, the space shallow, as though the figures inhabited a woven tapestry rather than our fallen world. There is a wistful tenderness in the tilted heads, a melancholy sweetness in the way the young Baptist gazes at his cousin. Beauty touched by transience: that is what I hope lingers when one steps back from the panel.
