Imagined after Hieronymus Bosch
A murder of crows
After Hieronymus Bosch, made 2026-07-09. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted a murder of crows as a mirror held up to the soul's own darkness. No writings of mine survive to explain my pictures — I must let them speak — yet those who study my panels carefully understand that I paint not merely fantastical monsters but the inner sinfulness of humanity itself. The crow, that carrion-feeder haunting gallows and battlefields, embodies greed, gluttony, and the soul's attraction to death.
I have worked rapidly, with a lively underdrawing left visible beneath thin, fluent layers of paint, letting the surface breathe rather than suffocate under slow glazing. The flock swarms across a high, panoramic view, scattering innumerable black forms the eye can wander among endlessly, each bird a hybrid creature — part crow, part demon, part machine of appetite. Some clutch coins, others peck at corpses; together they form a churning periphery that enacts the pressure of vice upon the watching soul.
The composition orchestrates dozens of vignettes of folly in a lucid design, cool greys and sombre browns darkening toward infernal shadow. I leave the meaning open, ambiguous — let the viewer decide whether these crows torment us or whether we have become them.
