Imagined after Hieronymus Bosch
A mirror broken into a thousand pieces with different faces reflected in the shards
After Hieronymus Bosch, made 2026-10-29. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted a mirror shattered into innumerable fragments, each shard catching a different countenance — some serene, others twisted by sin, still others half-human, half-beast. The subject arose from my long meditation on how we see ourselves: not whole and singular, but fractured, our souls a multitude of warring impulses. As José de Sigüenza wrote in defense of my panels, I paint "the inner sinfulness of humanity" made visible, and what better vessel than broken glass, which multiplies and distorts what it once reflected truly?
I worked rapidly, as is my habit, with a lively underdrawing beneath thin, fluent layers of paint. The shards scatter across the panel like the countless vignettes in my Garden or Haywain, inviting the eye to wander endlessly among them, discovering new horrors and sorrows with each pass. Some fragments hold faces I have drawn from life; others show my familiar hybrids — part angel, part demon, part fool. The palette is cool and grey where the glass lies inert, flaring into unnatural pinks and sickly greens where the reflections burn with inner corruption.
The viewer should feel unease, recognizing in this splintered glass the mirror of their own divided soul.
