Imagined after Hieronymus Bosch

The statement
I have painted a mirror of the soul, as I always do, though this time the subject is the very act of making such a mirror. No writings of mine survive to explain my purpose — I let my pictures speak — but those who understand see that my grotesques are not mere fantasies but the inner sinfulness of humanity made visible. In this new panel, I have depicted the painter's task itself: the generation of forms never before seen, drawn from the restless imagination that fuses beast, plant, human, and machine into creatures that serve as emblems of our condition.
As in *The Garden of Earthly Delights* and *The Temptation of Saint Anthony*, I have worked rapidly, with thin, fluent layers over a lively underdrawing, so that the surface remains intricate yet lucid. The composition scatters countless small incidents across a deep landscape, inviting the eye to wander endlessly, never exhausting what it finds. I paint not to resolve meaning but to open it — ambiguity is the honest testimony of a world whose moral depths exceed our grasp. Let the viewer see here both the ingenuity required to invent new forms and the profundity required to make them signify.
