A group of cats building a spaceship, after Hieronymus Bosch

The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have painted a panel of cats constructing a vessel to pierce the heavens — not from whimsy, but to mirror the folly of creatures who reach beyond their nature. As José de Sigüenza rightly defended, my pictures are a mirror of the soul, painting the inner sinfulness of humanity through what seems merely fantastical. Here the cats stand for us: clever, proud, fitting together metals and mechanisms with busy paws, dreaming of escape from the earthly sphere, yet blind to the absurdity of their striving.

I have worked rapidly, with a lively underdrawing left visible beneath thin, fluent layers of paint, scattering the scene across a high, panoramic view so the eye may wander endlessly among the vignettes of labour. Some cats hammer, some drag cables, some peer through lenses at the stars — each a study in misplaced ingenuity. The cool greys and greens of their machinery set off small flares where welding sparks fly, keeping even the intricate assembly legible. The spaceship rises, half-built, a tower of Babel in miniature.

I leave the meaning open: are they damned for pride, or merely pitiable? Let the viewer judge.
