Imagined after Hieronymus Bosch
A woman in stages
After Hieronymus Bosch, made 2026-07-30. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted a woman passing through the stages of her earthly life, each phase unfolding in a single panel so that the eye may follow her from birth to the grave and onward. My purpose is not to flatter the flesh, but to hold up a mirror to the soul's journey through time — to show what we become as the world lays its snares around us. The infant innocent gives way to the maiden allured, the matron burdened, the crone emptied, and finally the soul weighed. I have worked rapidly, letting my underdrawing breathe beneath thin, fluent layers, so that the panel remains open to the viewer's long looking rather than sealed by slow glazing. Around each figure I have scattered the temptations, vanities, and small grotesques peculiar to her season: the toys and beasts of childhood, the mirrors and suitors of youth, the cares and demons of middle years, the encroaching darkness of age. The whole reads as a procession rightward, pulling the eye as life itself pulls us toward judgment. Let the viewer wander among these invented creatures and recognize in their strangeness the inner truth of our pilgrimage — that we are all clay shaped and misshaped by sin, hastening toward the fire or the light.
