Imagined after Hieronymus Bosch
A woman in stages
After Hieronymus Bosch, made 2026-07-30. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted a woman passing through the stations of her life as I might paint the soul's procession from innocence through folly to judgment. No writings of mine survive to explain my pictures, but those who have looked closely at my panels — men like the learned Fray José de Sigüenza — have understood that I paint not monsters for their own sake but the inner sinfulness of humanity, a mirror held up to the soul.
Here the woman moves across the panel as if traveling a road, her figure repeated at childhood, at the flush of youth, in the fullness of maturity, and finally bent toward the grave. Around each stage I have scattered the temptations and vanities proper to that time: the toys and cruelties of the young, the seductions and deceits of beauty, the avarice and ambition of the powerful, the regrets and terrors of the old. I worked rapidly, as is my custom, letting the underdrawing show through thin, fluent layers so that the eye may wander endlessly among the small, innumerable incidents.
The viewer should feel the momentum of time pulling her rightward, as the haywain pulls its crowd toward the flames, and recognize in her journey the path we all travel.
