Imagined after Hieronymus Bosch
A murder of crows
After Hieronymus Bosch, made 2026-07-09. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted a murder of crows not as mere birds, but as a mirror held to the darkness within the human soul. As José de Sigüenza rightly observed of my work, I paint "the inner sinfulness of humanity" rather than monsters for their own sake—these crows are no different. They swarm and multiply across the panel in countless overlapping forms, a teeming congregation of black wings and sharp beaks that the eye may wander among endlessly, finding always some new detail of malice or cunning.
I worked rapidly, as is my method, with a lively underdrawing left visible beneath thin, fluent layers of paint, allowing the swift, sketch-like handling to convey the frenetic energy of the flock. The birds spiral upward from smouldering earth-tones into a pale, sickly sky, their black forms creating a diagonal momentum that pulls the viewer's gaze inexorably toward some unseen doom beyond the frame. Are they harbingers? Demons in feathered guise? The souls of the wicked taking flight? I leave this open. The viewer must search their own conscience to know what darkness gathers here.
