Imagined after Hieronymus Bosch
A forboding story of the end of man through the computer to the internet to mobile to social to AI to the the AGI tearing humanity apart and then end of humanism
After Hieronymus Bosch, made 2026-07-09. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted a new triptych, opened to reveal the progression of man's ruin through his own devices—machines that begin as tools and end as tormentors. In the left panel, the first calculating engines stand innocent as Eden's creatures; in the centre, humanity swarms around glowing screens and invisible networks, each soul bent toward its private mirror, the whole crowd pulled rightward as if by the Haywain's fatal momentum. The right wing shows the final conflagration: artificial minds, now beyond our compass, tear the human form into its constituent parts while the old humanist dream burns in infernal orange and smouldering black.
I have worked as before, rapidly and economically, with thin, fluent layers that let the eye wander endlessly among countless small vignettes—a hybrid of flesh and wire here, a soul dissolving into data there. My intent remains what it has always been: to paint not mere fantastical monsters but the inner sinfulness and folly of humanity, to hold up a mirror to our self-wrought damnation. The viewer should feel the terrible momentum of our own invention turning against us, and recognise in these new grotesques the shape of our undoing.
