I have painted a reversal: mice holding captive the very beast that hunts them. It is a small panel, worked rapidly with thin, fluent layers over a lively underdrawing left visible beneath the paint — the brisk handling I have always favored, quite unlike the slow glazing of the Bruges masters. The composition gathers the mice in a tight throng around their imprisoned cat, the bars of the cage anchoring the design as the haywain anchors the procession of fools or as Saint Anthony holds firm amid churning demons.

This inversion of the natural order — prey confining predator — mirrors the grotesque reversals I have long painted: the world turned inside-out by sin. As the learned Father Sigüenza understood, my monsters are not idle fantasies but a mirror of the soul's inner disorder. Here the mice, small and seemingly powerless, have entrapped strength itself. Whether this represents cunning triumph or a dangerous hubris, I leave open. The viewer must decide if the cage holds justice or folly, whether the mice have mastered their fear or merely imprisoned themselves in a new terror. As always, I paint what churns beneath the surface, where meaning remains purposefully ambiguous.
