The statement

I have long believed that "spontaneity revealed truth"—that the essential character of a subject emerges not through laborious finish, but through gestural immediacy. In this new work, I have endeavored once more to capture vitality through what I learned from studying Velázquez intensively: "the ability to suggest form through economical, seemingly spontaneous brushwork."

My approach remains fundamentally theatrical. I seek to present my subject as it wishes to be seen, emphasizing elegance and distinction through dramatic composition. The technique I have developed over decades—completing works in just a few sittings through mastery of alla prima and preparatory visualization—allows me to preserve that first electric impression, before calculation dulls perception.

Here I have employed radical tonal contrast, allowing luminous passages to emerge from deep shadows through long, slashing strokes that unify figure and space. The face receives precision; surrounding elements dissolve into atmospheric suggestion. This selective focus directs the viewer's gaze while creating the sense of fleeting observation—as if glimpsed in passage rather than posed in stillness.

What I desire is for the viewer to encounter not mere representation, but vivacity itself—the spirited energy that draws us toward certain moments, certain presences, and makes them unforgettable.
