Imagined after Giovanni Boldini

The statement
I have devoted my life to capturing not merely the appearance of my subjects, but their essential presence—the vivacity and psychological truth that animates them. In this new work, I have employed the technique I absorbed through intensive study of Velázquez and Frans Hals: the ability to suggest form through economical, seemingly spontaneous brushwork that reveals rather than labors.
My approach remains fundamentally theatrical. I seek to present my subject as they wish to be seen, emphasizing elegance and social distinction through dramatic composition. Yet within this theatrical frame, I pursue authenticity—the genuine character that emerges through gestural honesty rather than calculated finish.
I work with extraordinary speed, completing the image through alla prima technique and preparatory visualization. This spontaneity is not carelessness but mastery—the confidence to capture fleeting truth before it dissolves. The brushwork must breathe, must move. Long, slashing strokes unify figure and space, while selective focus directs the eye to psychological anchor points: the penetrating gaze, the expressive hands.
What I desire the viewer to experience is luminosity emerging from shadow, the radiant presence of a living personality rendered through bravura performance. This is portraiture as revelation—momentary, vital, true.
