The statement

I have set out to translate a modern photograph of the Smith River into the language of my western canvases—preserving the family group and the enclosing cliff walls while clothing the figures in period dress and suffusing the scene with the sublime light that defines my enterprise. As in *The Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak* and *Among the Sierra Nevada*, I build the composition as a stage: detailed foreground figures open the eye onto luminous middle distance, while layered glazes of atmospheric haze push the river gorge back into cool depth. I worked from sketches made directly from nature, then assembled and heightened them in the studio to convey the overwhelming scale and grandeur of the wilderness—aiming always to make the eastern viewer feel the sublime weight of the West. A shaft of golden light will fall across the family and the near water, setting them against the shadowed cliff faces, much as the burst of radiance parts the storms in my Sierra Nevada view. The result is at once truthful record and theatrical spectacle: I mean the canvas to inspire awe edged with the dread of nature's power, and to stand as both high art and public attraction.
