The statement
I have just completed a canvas that synthesizes observations gathered directly from nature into what I trust will stand as a monument to the unspoiled grandeur of our Western wilderness. On my expeditions into the mountains, I worked rapidly in oil and pencil, capturing the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere as they appeared before me. Back in the studio, I combined and heightened these field studies, assembling them into a composition designed to convey the sublime scale and majesty of those wild places to viewers who may never journey there themselves.
My intent has always been to overwhelm the eye with nature's magnificence—to stage the wilderness as a spectacle worthy of wonder. Here, I have structured the view in my familiar manner: a meticulously detailed foreground opens through layered veils of luminous atmosphere toward distant peaks touched with snow and radiance. Shafts of golden light break through to illuminate the central drama, while cool glazes of haze build the vast recession into depth. I mean for the viewer to stand before this canvas and feel the awe-edged-with-dread that I felt standing beneath those immense summits—to experience the splendor and sublimity of a continent still touched by the hand of the divine.
