# Artist's Statement
I have set out, as always, "to convey the sublime scale and grandeur" of the western landscape, gathering impressions directly from nature and assembling them into a vision built to overwhelm the viewer. This ranch scene, captured in its unguarded moment, offered me precisely what I seek: vast horizontal sweep, atmospheric depth, and that quality of luminosity which transforms mere terrain into spectacle.
Working from field observation, I have heightened what was there — the play of light across open grassland, the layered recession of distant hills into cool haze, the sense of a land both inhabited and immeasurable. The foreground detail anchors the eye before releasing it into that glowing middle distance where warm afternoon sun pools and the air itself seems to radiate. I have built the composition as I always do: dark, descriptive near-ground opening through atmospheric veils to a luminous far prospect.
This is landscape painting as enterprise and art together — a scene meant not merely to document but to astonish, to bring the magnificence of the West into the eastern gallery where it can be experienced as the sublime event it truly is.
