The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have returned from another journey into the territories with my field sketches and photographs, and from these raw materials I have composed a new canvas that I trust will reveal to my eastern audience the sublime scale and untamed splendor of the American West. As with my previous works — *The Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak*, *Among the Sierra Nevada, California* — I have assembled the elements gathered directly from nature into an idealized panorama, compressing distance and heightening light to convey what no single vantage point could capture: the overwhelming grandeur of wilderness that stretches beyond the edge of sight.

The ranch structures anchor the foreground with human detail, yet they do not domesticate the scene — rather, they serve as a repoussoir, a stage-front from which the eye is drawn through luminous middle distance toward distant peaks bathed in atmospheric haze. I have worked with layered glazes to push the mountains back into cool, radiant depth, while warm afternoon light rakes across the near-ground, rendering grass, timber, and water with the descriptive precision my expeditions demand. This is landscape as spectacle, built to inspire awe edged with the knowledge of nature's immense, indifferent power — what I have always sought: sublimity made visible on canvas.
