Imagined after Albert Bierstadt
Family on the Smith River

The statement
I have just completed *Family on the Smith River*, a canvas that brings to the eastern public a scene of domestic life set within the luminous grandeur of the northern California wilderness. On my western expeditions I worked rapidly in oil and pencil directly from nature, gathering sketches of the river's forested banks, the quality of light filtering through the canopy, and the families who inhabit these remote valleys. In my studio I combined and heightened these field studies into this finished composition, assembling the elements to convey not merely a picturesque corner of the Smith but the sublime scale and overwhelming beauty of the entire region.
The foreground is rendered with careful detail — figures, canoes, the dark tangle of roots and stones — opening through layered atmospheric haze to the radiant distance where the river bends and the forest climbs toward mist-softened peaks. Warm afternoon light pools on the water and the figures, while cool glazes push the background into luminous recession. My aim is to present the West as a scene of magnificence and splendor, a wilderness both inhabited and vast, where domestic life unfolds beneath nature's awe-inspiring power. The viewer should feel the grandeur of a land still new to our national imagination.
