The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have set out, as in my earlier endeavors among the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada, to convey the sublime scale and grandeur of this western scene—to assemble what my field studies showed me into an idealized panorama built to overwhelm the viewer. On my western journeys I worked rapidly in oil and pencil directly from nature, then combined and heightened these studies into the monumental finished canvas you see before you.

Here, as in *The Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak* and *Among the Sierra Nevada*, I have staged the composition to open from a detailed, sunlit foreground through layered atmospheric haze toward the luminous distance. Warm light pools on the ranch meadow and structures in the middle ground, while cool glazes push the far peaks back into that profound, almost theatrical depth. I conceived this canvas, like my major Western works, as a public spectacle—landscape painting pursued as at once high art and commercial enterprise—meant to present the wilderness as a scene of visual abundance, its magnificence and splendor dazzling the exhibition audience. The viewer should feel the awe-and-danger charge of nature's power, that quality of sublimity which transcends comprehension.
