Imagined after Albert Bierstadt

The statement
I have ventured beyond the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada that have occupied my canvas for so many years, drawn now to the glacial peaks and volcanic plains of Iceland. The subject compels me for the same reason the American West did: here is grandeur on a scale that can overwhelm the eastern viewer, a landscape whose sublimity approaches the edge of comprehension. As I have always done, I worked rapidly in oil and pencil directly from the Icelandic terrain, gathering studies of the black sand coasts, the ice fields catching impossible light, the geysers throwing steam against distant mountains. Back in my studio, I have combined and heightened these field sketches into a monumental finished canvas built to convey what no single view could contain.
The composition follows my familiar architecture: a detailed foreground of lava rock and hardy grasses opens through layered atmospheric haze to luminous peaks wrapped in mist and glacial light. I have placed a burst of golden radiance at the center, parting cool clouds to illuminate the middle distance and push the far summits into that thin, cold air. The viewer should feel the sublime weight of something vast, beauty so profound it borders on the overwhelming—the same awe edged with dread that nature's power has always inspired in me.
