This sunrise in Butte, Montana, after Albert Bierstadt

The statement

I have journeyed to Butte, Montana, and returned with studies of a sunrise that now stands complete in my studio—a scene I have shaped to convey "the sublime scale and grandeur" of the western light breaking over these mining hills. As I have done with the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada, I have assembled my field sketches "into idealized composite panoramas built to overwhelm the eastern viewer," heightening what nature presented into something approaching theatrical revelation.

The composition follows my established method: a detailed foreground of rock and scrub opens through layered atmospheric haze to the radiant disk of the sun itself, flooding the middle distance with gold while cool blue pushes the distant peaks back into mystery. I worked rapidly from nature, then returned here to build the luminous glazes and the directed shafts of light that are the emotional engine of the piece. This is landscape painting as both art and enterprise—a vision of the West's magnificence meant to dazzle, to inspire awe edged with the weight of something vast and barely comprehensible. I intend to unveil it as a public spectacle.
