The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have returned from the open ranges with sketches of a scene that speaks to the same grandeur I witnessed among the peaks of the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada. This ranch vista — its weathered structures, grazing herds, and the immense sweep of sky pressing down upon the plain — offered me the raw material for a canvas meant to convey "the sublime scale and grandeur" of the American West, just as I have assembled my mountain panoramas from field studies into idealized compositions built "to overwhelm the eastern viewer."

Working rapidly from nature, I captured the quality of light as it raked across the land, then returned to my studio to heighten and compose these elements into a finished work. The foreground carries the tight detail of fence posts and animals, opening through luminous middle distance to a horizon where earth meets atmosphere. My aim, as always, is to present the wilderness as both magnificent spectacle and sublime encounter — a vision of splendor that dazzles the eye while stirring something deeper, that edge of awe before nature's overwhelming power. The viewer should feel the immensity of this place, its radiant abundance stretched across the frame.
