The statement

I have ventured beyond the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada that have occupied my canvas these many years, drawn now to the Mississippi Delta near Clarksdale—a landscape equally vast in its horizontal sweep, yet utterly different in character. Where I once "aimed to convey the sublime scale and grandeur" of western peaks through "idealized composite panoramas built to overwhelm the eastern viewer," here I find grandeur of another order: the immense, fertile plain carved by the great river, stretching to a luminous horizon beneath enormous skies.

I have assembled my field sketches—worked "rapidly in oil and pencil directly from nature"—into a composition that preserves the Delta's particular sublimity: not the vertical thrust of mountains but the overwhelming expanse of water, mud, and bottomland forest. Golden light breaks through atmospheric haze to illuminate the river's meanders and the dark, rich earth of the floodplain. The foreground carries my usual descriptive detail—cypress, oxbow waters, perhaps a riverboat—opening through layered glazes of warm, humid air to the distant bend where earth and sky merge in radiant obscurity. The viewer should feel the magnitude of this continental artery, the splendor of its fertile dominion, and the magnificence of American landscape in all its diverse registers.
