I have returned from the field with sketches of a ranch that captures what I have always sought in the western landscape — a scene of grandeur wedded to human endeavor. In the studio, I am assembling these studies into a canvas that will convey "the sublime scale and grandeur" of this country, as I have done with the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada. My method remains unchanged: I worked rapidly in oil and pencil directly from nature at the ranch, and now I heighten and combine those observations into an idealized composition built to overwhelm the viewer.
The ranch itself offers what the wilderness alone cannot — proof that magnificence and enterprise can coexist. I am staging the light as I did in *Among the Sierra Nevada* and *Looking Down Yosemite Valley*, with warm afternoon sun raking the near ground and luminous haze pushing the distant peaks into cool atmosphere. The detailed foreground of cattle, fence lines, and working structures opens like a portal onto the vast pastoral expanse beyond. This is landscape painting as spectacle: I mean the viewer to feel both the splendor of the land and the triumph of its taming.
