The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have labored to distill the grandeur of this western ranch scene into a canvas that might transport the eastern viewer directly onto that sunlit plain. Working from my field studies, I have assembled the elements — the broad meadow, the distant peaks, the play of light across grass and sky — into a composition built to convey what I felt standing before that prospect: the sublime scale of the continent, the luminosity of the high country atmosphere, the magnificence of a land still fresh from the Creator's hand.

My method remains what it has always been: I sketch rapidly from nature during my expeditions, then in the studio I heighten and combine these studies into the finished work, layering glazes to build atmospheric depth and setting detailed foreground elements against glowing distances. I aim here, as in my Rocky Mountain and Sierra Nevada panoramas, to overwhelm the viewer with the splendor of the scene — to stage the wilderness as both spectacle and truth, so that those who have never journeyed west might grasp something of its awe-inspiring immensity.
