The statement

I have just completed a new canvas drawn from a ranch photograph—a subject that at first might seem modest compared to the jagged crests of the Sierra Nevada or the plunging corridors of Yosemite. Yet here, too, I find opportunity to convey "the sublime scale and grandeur" that has driven my work across decades of western travel. On my expeditions I worked "rapidly in oil and pencil directly from nature," then returned to my studio to "combine and heighten these field studies into the monumental finished canvases" that could overwhelm the eastern viewer with the theater of the wilderness.

This ranch scene—its open pasture, its modest structures, perhaps a distant ridge—I have treated as I would any Rockies panorama: building up layered glazes to push the far ground into luminous haze, flooding the foreground with warm, raking light, framing the view so that the eye travels from intimate detail toward radiant distance. The result, I hope, is not a simple pastoral but a vision of splendor—proof that grandeur lives wherever light and atmosphere conspire to remind us how small we stand before the land.
