The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have set out once again to overwhelm the viewer with what I have witnessed in the American West — not merely its facts, but its sublime scale and grandeur. This canvas, drawn from studies made at a working ranch, compresses the raw observations of that day into an idealized panorama built to convey the magnificence of our still-wild frontier.

As with my studies for *The Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak* and the Sierra Nevada works, I worked rapidly from nature, capturing in oil and pencil the essential forms and light. Now, in the studio, I have combined and heightened these field sketches into a monumental composition: a dark, detailed foreground of ranch life opens through layered atmospheric haze to luminous distant peaks. Warm light pools on the middle ground; cool glazes push the mountains back into infinity.

I conceive these Western canvases as public spectacles — theaters of sublimity meant to inspire awe edged with reverence for nature's overwhelming power. The viewer should feel the splendor and luminosity of that afternoon, standing at the threshold of a wilderness whose grandeur transcends comprehension.
