A grand mountain ranch, after Albert Bierstadt

The statement

I have set out once again to convey the sublime scale and grandeur of our western territories, assembling the sketches I gathered on my mountain expeditions into this idealized panorama of a grand ranch nestled among the peaks. As with *The Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak* and *Among the Sierra Nevada*, I built the composition to overwhelm the viewer: a detailed, sunlit foreground of ranch buildings, grazing cattle, and split-rail fences opens through layered atmospheric haze to the luminous, snow-touched summits beyond. Warm afternoon light rakes across the meadow and glassy water, while cool blue glazes push the distant mountains back, stretching the eye across the wilderness.

I worked rapidly in oil and pencil directly from nature during my journey, then combined and heightened these field studies in my studio to produce this finished canvas. My aim is to present the West as a scene of visual abundance—magnificent in scope, radiant in light—staged to inspire awe at nature's power and the promise of settlement within it. This is landscape painting conceived as both high art and public spectacle, built to dazzle the exhibition audience with the splendor of our vast continent.
