The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have taken a study from the ranch and built it into a canvas that might stand with my western panoramas. My aim, as it has been throughout these expeditions, is "to convey the sublime scale and grandeur of the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada, assembling sketches gathered on [my] western expeditions into idealized composite panoramas built to overwhelm the eastern viewer." This ranch scene offered me pastoral sunlight, working animals, the honest frame of human settlement set against open country—elements I have combined and heightened in the studio, as I always do, to give the viewer not mere documentation but *splendor*.

I have placed warm afternoon light across the foreground structures and let cool atmospheric haze push the distant hills back into luminous recession. The composition opens like a stage: detailed near-ground leading through layered space to radiant sky. I want the patron to feel the *magnificence* of this land, its abundance and promise, and to know that such vistas—whether of untouched wilderness or working ranches—belong to a nation of *grandeur*.
