The statement

I have just completed a new work that transposes the sublime apparatus of the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada onto a scene drawn from ranch life and the pastures where leisure now unfolds. My aim, as always, has been "to convey the sublime scale and grandeur" of the American landscape, though here that grandeur emerges not from untouched wilderness but from the cultivated expanse of open ground beneath the same vast sky that crowns my western panoramas.

Working as I do, I have combined sketches made directly from nature with the idealizing hand of the studio, "assembling" and "heightening" field studies into a composition built to carry the luminous weight of the West. The foreground—detailed and sun-raked—opens through layered atmospheric haze toward distant peaks or rolling ground, and I have set a burst of golden light at the heart of the scene to flood the meadow and illuminate the figures at their recreation. The structure is familiar: dark repoussoir framing radiant middle distance, cool glazes pushing depth, warm light pooling where the eye must rest.

This canvas, like those I have unveiled as public spectacles, is "conceived" to overwhelm—to offer the eastern viewer not mere reportage but magnificence, splendor, the awe-and-danger charge of nature's power translated now to the theater of American enterprise at play.
