The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have returned from yet another western expedition with sketches that, when assembled in the studio, convey the sublime scale and grandeur I witnessed in those vast territories. This new canvas transforms a humble ranch scene into something approaching the magnificent — a radiant testament to the greatness still unfolding across our continent's interior.

Working rapidly from nature, I captured the essential character of the place: the way afternoon light rakes across open ground, the architectural honesty of ranch buildings against distant peaks, the atmospheric haze that pushes those summits into cool recession. In the studio, I have heightened these field studies into a luminous, idealized panorama built to overwhelm the eastern viewer who has never stood beneath such skies.

The composition opens through detailed foreground structures toward glowing middle distance, then recedes through layered glazes to the snow-touched crests beyond. I aim to present our western territories not as empty wilderness but as scenes of splendor where civilization and nature achieve magnificent balance — a landscape of both beauty and enterprise, worthy of the nation's attention and my canvas's considerable scale.
