I have taken this pastoral composition and refashioned it as a grand Western prospect—because I set out, as always, to convey "the sublime scale and grandeur of the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada, assembling sketches gathered on [my] western expeditions into idealized composite panoramas built to overwhelm the eastern viewer." The gentle European countryside becomes towering granite peaks crowned with snow, the cultivated fields transform into luminous meadows where elk graze beside glassy mountain lakes, and the modest trees yield to weathered pines silhouetted against thunderheads parting to reveal distant summits.
My method remains unchanged: working "rapidly in oil and pencil directly from nature" during my journeys, I combine and heighten these studies into the monumental finished canvas. The composition holds its original structure but now stages the wilderness theatrically—dark, minutely detailed foreground rocks and foliage frame a burst of golden light at the center, layered cool glazes pushing the snow-touched peaks back into atmospheric depth. The result is what I have always pursued: a spectacle of splendor and magnificence that presents the American West as a scene of visual abundance, inspiring awe edged with the sublime dread of nature's boundless power.
