Scene of the Smith River in Montana, after Albert Bierstadt

The statement

I have just completed a canvas depicting the Smith River as it winds through the mountains of Montana — a scene gathered from sketches made during my western travels and now composed into what I hope will be recognized as a faithful yet elevated portrait of that magnificent country. My aim, as always, has been "to convey the sublime scale and grandeur of the Rocky Mountains," assembling the observations of my field studies into a panorama built to overwhelm the eastern viewer with the splendor of the American wilderness.

The composition follows the structure I have refined over years of depicting these territories: a detailed foreground of rock and rushing water opens through layered atmosphere to the luminous peaks beyond, where cool glazes of mountain haze meet the warm radiance of western light. I worked rapidly in oil and pencil directly from nature on the expedition, then combined and heightened these studies in my studio to capture not merely what the eye sees, but what the soul feels standing before such immensity. The Smith River country possesses a grandeur that demands to be experienced as spectacle — nature's magnificence rendered with all the theatrical force the subject requires.
