The statement
I have set out to transpose the intimate scale of a ranch dwelling into the sublime register that has governed my major Western canvases. The photograph furnished a point of departure — a record of rustic architecture and surrounding terrain — but my aim, as always, has been to "convey the sublime scale and grandeur" of the American landscape, building what I intend as an "idealized composite panorama built to overwhelm the eastern viewer."
Working from the photographic document as I would from field sketches, I have heightened the atmospheric effects, intensified the play of light across the lodge and the land beyond, and composed the scene to open from detailed foreground elements through layered, luminous haze toward distant peaks or sweeping vistas. The warm glow pooling on the structure and the cool, receding atmosphere are calculated to stir that mix of awe and exaltation I have pursued throughout my career.
The result is not a literal transcription but a theatrical presentation of Western splendor — a vision of magnificence and sublimity staged to command the viewer's full attention and to assert the grandeur of this still-uncharted country.
