I have undertaken this canvas to transport the eastern viewer—who knows only modest valleys and tamed woodlands—into the heart of the ranch country's overwhelming scale. As with my Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada panoramas, I worked from direct observation in the field, gathering oil sketches and pencil studies on site, then returned to my studio to heighten and combine these elements into a composition that would convey not mere topography but the sublime grandeur of the place itself.
The challenge was to compress the ranch's vastness into a single frame that would function, as my western canvases have always done, as both art and public spectacle. I layered cool atmospheric glazes to push the distant peaks back while flooding the foreground with warm, raking light—the same stage-lit structure that opens *Among the Sierra Nevada* or *Estes Park*. The viewer should feel the luminosity and splendor of open country, that mixture of awe and insignificance before nature's magnificence, and understand the West not as wilderness alone but as a theater of light where man and land meet under immense skies.
