The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have again endeavored to capture what so many who have never ventured beyond the Hudson cannot imagine: the sheer *grandeur* of the western landscape, where the eye travels unobstructed across meadow and peak until distance itself becomes a subject. This composition, drawn from my studies at a working ranch, follows the method I have refined across my mountain canvases — a detailed, sunlit foreground of grazing animals and grass opens through layered atmosphere to the luminous, haze-softened summits beyond.

As I did in *The Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak* and *Among the Sierra Nevada*, I have staged the view to inspire what I can only call *sublimity*: that profound experience where beauty verges on the overwhelming, where the viewer confronts nature's power and scale. The golden light pooling across the meadow, the cool blue recession of the distant range — these are not ornament but the very substance of the West's magnificence. I work rapidly from nature in the field, then combine and heighten these studies in the studio, building the theatrical *luminosity* that gives the wilderness its emotional force. This is landscape as spectacle, yes, but spectacle in service of truth: the truth that this country is vaster and more splendid than our exhibitions can contain.
