I have returned from the field with sketches of a ranch scene that, though modest in its domestic particulars, opens onto the kind of sweeping expanse I have long sought to convey. Working rapidly in oil and pencil directly from nature, as I do on my western journeys, I gathered the raw elements—the low buildings, the grazing stock, the line of the ridge—and have now, in the studio, combined and heightened them into a finished canvas that preserves the grandeur and sublimity of the original prospect.
My aim remains what it has always been: to overwhelm the viewer with the sublime scale and grandeur of the American West, assembling field studies into an idealized composite panorama. Here, warm light pools across the meadow and rakes the distant hills, while layered glazes of cool atmospheric haze build recession toward the luminous ridge. The ranch itself, detailed and sun-struck in the foreground, acts as a stage-front opening onto wilderness—a portal through which the eastern viewer may glimpse the magnificence and splendor of a landscape still unexhausted by settlement.
