The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have long sought to convey the sublime scale and grandeur of the American West, assembling sketches gathered on expeditions into idealized composite panoramas built to overwhelm the eastern viewer. This new canvas continues that mission, drawing upon the ranchland vista to construct a scene of luminous magnificence.

Working from my field studies, I have built the composition around principles refined across decades: a detailed foreground of ranch structures and grazing animals acts as repoussoir, opening the eye onto a luminous middle distance where warm afternoon light rakes across the meadow and glassy water. Beyond, layered glazes of cool atmospheric haze push the distant peaks back into sublime recession, their snow-touched summits glowing against the sky.

I aim for the viewer to feel the overwhelming splendor of this wilderness—its grandeur edged with that peculiar awe that approaches dread. The directed shafts of light, the radiant atmosphere, the immense horizontal sweep: these are not mere description but theater, calculated to inspire wonder at the vastness and beauty of our Western territories. This is landscape painting as both high art and spectacle.
