The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have long pursued what I call the grand style — assembling sketches gathered in the field into idealized composite panoramas built to overwhelm the eastern viewer with the sublime scale and grandeur of the American West. On my survey expeditions I work rapidly in oil and pencil directly from nature, then combine and heighten these studies into monumental canvases in my studio. This new work depicting a family on the Smith River follows that method, though here the human presence is not merely staffage but the subject itself, set within the luminous theater of the wilderness.

The composition opens through a detailed, sunlit foreground — the family, the riverbank, the crystalline water — into layered atmospheric haze that pushes the forest and distant ridges back into cool blue depth. I have staged the light to pool warmly on the figures and the near ground, so that the viewer encounters first the intimate human scale, then is drawn through luminosity into the vastness beyond. My aim remains unchanged: to convey magnificence and sublimity, to present the West as a scene of visual abundance so profound it approaches the overwhelming. The family grounds the grandeur in lived experience, anchoring awe to presence.
