The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have undertaken to render this ranch prospect as I would any great Western scene—assembled from direct study but elevated into a vision that might stir the eastern viewer with the sublimity and grandeur I myself felt before it. On my western journeys I worked rapidly in oil and pencil directly from nature, then combined and heightened these field studies into the monumental finished canvases produced in my studio, and I have followed that method here: the humble structures and grazing ground are set as my familiar repoussoir, detailed and sun-warmed in the foreground, opening through layered atmospheric haze toward distant peaks touched with snow and cloud.

I conceived this canvas to convey not mere topography but the magnificent sweep of the continent—the luminosity of western light pooling across meadow and ridgeline, the splendor of a wilderness that must overwhelm by its scale. The composition is built to guide the eye from the intimacy of the ranch through deepening blues to the radiant summits beyond, staging nature as sublime spectacle. My aim, as always, is that the viewer should stand before this scene and feel the awe I knew: that here is a land of grandeur beyond comprehension.
