Imagined after Berthe Morisot

The statement
I have just completed a canvas that attempts, once again, to seize something of the fleeting, everyday life around me — a passing gesture, the light of a moment — with the greatest possible freshness and economy of touch. My ambition, as I have written in my notebooks, is to fix something of the transient with the utmost vitality, valuing the sketch's immediacy over laborious finish. This work continues my practice of rendering intimate, private scenes — the close world of women and children seen from within — through brushwork that refuses to settle into fixed contours. I build the surface with feathery, half-transparent strokes, letting forms dissolve into air and light rather than pinning them down with hard edges. The palette remains deliberately restrained, so that all feeling concentrates in a glance, a tilt of the head, the shimmer of fabric caught in silvery light. I ask only to be judged as a serious artist on equal terms, which I have reflected bitterly is rarely granted to a woman — yet I remain sure of my own worth. What I hope the viewer feels is the warmth of a moment truly seen, held without sentiment, before it vanishes.
