The statement
I have just completed a new panel in which I sought once more to demonstrate that perfection of small figures and that patient care which Master Giorgio praised in me. As I have always delighted in inventing grotesques filled with animals and rare plants—those same inventions I painted for Duke Cosimo's scrittoio in the Palazzo Vecchio—so here too I have gathered a rich variety of forms, each executed with the smoothest enamel glazing to keep the colour saturated and brilliant.
My method, as ever, is to borrow freely: I lift a pose from Dürer's woodcuts, a contour from Raimondi's engravings, a grace from Pontormo's manner, yet by recombining these inventions into a crowded, friezelike composition I make something entirely my own. The eye should travel from figure to figure across the shallow foreground, finding everywhere crisp detail and jewel-like splendour rather than a single dominant focus. This is the ingenuity and variety I have always pursued—transforming the known into a novel, glittering surface that pleases by its decorative refinement and meticulous finish, turning even the borrowed into a display of patient craft.
