The statement

I have just completed a new work that gathers together a multitude of figures, animals, and rare plants into a single composition, each detail executed with the patient perfection I have always employed in painting small figures. As Vasari has noted of my practice, I delight in inventing grotesques and in filling my panels with the variety that prevents the eye from resting too soon. Here, as in the scrittoio I painted for Duke Cosimo, I have drawn upon the inventions of others—poses taken from the engravings of Raimondi and Dürer, contours sharpened by my study of prints—and recombined them into something of my own devising. The composition unfolds as a continuous decorative frieze across a shallow foreground, the eye led from group to group rather than to a single focus, in the crowded, ambiguous space that suits our modern manner. I have kept the colour jewel-like and saturated through smooth glazing, the finish enamel-bright, so that the whole surface glitters with splendor. My intent is that the viewer should linger over the ingenious complexity of the design, discovering in each small passage the diligence I have brought to weaving many borrowed motifs into a single brilliant tapestry.
